France to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
